A giant blood sausage, entertaining street musicians and brass bands. Carnival is a big deal in Villar del Arzobispo.

Villar del Arzobispo takes Carnaval very seriously. Named an event of regional tourist interest, the town’s carnival is not only one of the biggest in the Region of Valencia, but it also has a number of traditions that are unique to it.

Villar del Arzobispo is famed for its morcilla – a sort of blood sausage – and this product plays a central role in the carnival celebrations. Known as morcas, the sausage symbolises the arrival of Lent and with it a period of abstinence from eating meat. A "vigil" is therefore held for a large cardboard version of the sausage.

While this unique vigil takes place, the streets are filled with music and dancing.

The next day, there is the parade of the botargas, people dressed up in sheets and other household items that make them completely unrecognisable. These figures invite anyone they come across to dance with them. There is also a competition for street musicians and their satirical songs about the town and its people, or the present day in general.

Don’t miss this most unique of carnival celebrations in Villar del Arzobispo.
