Every June, Alicante is thoroughly transformed as it celebrates Las Hogueras de San Juan, the San Juan Bonfires. From 20 to 24 June, the bonfires, or fogueres as they are called in Valencian, make their appearance on the streets. These are true artistic monuments, expressing both wicked satire and marvellous ingenuity. And they are created simply to be burnt!

The ritual burning is followed by parades and traditional dances. Let yourself go with the music, whilst admiring the traditional costumes. Being the Las Hogueras de San Juan, there is no shortage of gunpowder - the whole of Alicante reeks of it! Make sure you don't miss the daily mascletà at 2 pm.

The committees are this festival's lifeblood: they mark out their territory by erecting an artistic entrance to their barraca, a space where they gather to share food and drink, while enjoying the festivities. These spots also celebrate the local cuisine, offering recipes such as coca amb tonyina, a savoury crispbread garnished with tinned tuna, or bacores, which are tiny sardines.

The evening of 24 June is the magical Nit de la Cremà. After a magnificent display of fireworks, launched from the battlements of Santa Bárbara Castle, the fogueres are lit. The entire city is bathed in spectacular, purifying fire, bringing the festival to an emotional yet fiery close. But the celebrations are just beginning! From 25 to 29 June, fireworks light up Postiguet Beach in a breathtaking competition that will leave you openmouthed in wonder. Come and be part of one of the Mediterranean's most vibrant festivals!

It is worth checking the official event information in advance.
