Dive into Alicante’s history with a visit to San Fernando Castle, built on Mount Tossal during the Peninsular War.

Alicante is home to great stories and Castillo de San Fernando, San Fernando Castle, is one of them. Bursting with secrets, this historical site sits on the highest point of Mount Tossal. The castle was built during the Peninsular War to do battle with Napoleon’s troops. It is one of a handful of castles built in the 19th century and is protected by the sheerness of the rockface, a great asset.

The castle is unique in appearance as its uneven structure moulds to the topography of the hillside. Vaults were built under the embankment as a place to mount a defence and there was a cistern to ensure a water supply. Inside, there was space to accommodate the troops and access was granted via a zigzagging ramp leading to an impressive main gate.

Nowadays, part of San Fernando Castle wall is still standing, making it the perfect place to visit and gaze at the views over the city. Don’t miss it.
