Playing an important role in collecting rainfall, Parque La Marjal in Alicante is a lovely park where you can relax and unwind.

Located close to San Juan beach in Alicante, Parque La Marjal is no ordinary park. Beyond being a pleasant place to while away the hours, it also serves as a retention basin, capturing water when there is heavy rainfall and reducing the risk of flooding in the low parts of the city. La Marjal can hold up to 45,000m3 of water.

The park is a lovely place to take a stroll, enjoy the views and unwind. Within the retention basin there is a large pond enveloped in beautiful aquatic plants. Here you will see plants and wildlife that are commonly found in marjales, the natural wetlands in the Region of Valencia. To keep the water in good condition, there is a recirculation system including a waterfall, rapids and a small pond.

The land that was removed to create the retention basin has been used to make a hill that affords beautiful views over the park and L'Alacantí. You’ll be spellbound by the beauty of the majestic mountains in the background. The hill has been made to look like traditional Mediterranean agricultural land.

From taking a wander to watching the birds, there are all sorts of things to do at La Marjal in Alicante. School trips are often held here to teach little ones about the environment. You’ll find information panels around the park as well as a mirador, a viewing point, gym equipment and even a place to park your bike. The bus and tram leave you close to the park, leaving you with no excuse not to come and visit.
