Fiestas de San Gregorio Obispo y el Ritual del 'Pa Beneït', San Gregorio Obispo Festival and the Pa Beneït Ritual, is held every year around the 9 May in Torremanzanas in the province of Alicante. Listed a Site of Cultural Interest, the festivities are held dear by the local community.

The festivities commemorate a series of occurrences that took place in the 17th century. When a swarm of locusts attacked the municipality, it put its survival at risk. San Gregorio Obispo has been accredited with saving the village and tradition dictates that thanks be shown with holy bread, a great loaf weighing some 8kg that the women of the village carry on their heads, accompanied by the "llumeners", the men of the village.

The bread is the focus of San Gregorio Obispo Festival and the Pa Beneït Ritual, featured in a charming procession in which the participants wear traditional clothing and that ends at the church where the bread is given as an offering. A floral offering is also given to the saint. For this event, the women of the village wear different clothing.

Interestingly, during San Gregorio Obispo Festival and the Pa Beneït Ritual, century-old popular songs are performed. Joining in with these festivities is a wonderful way to get to know Torremanzanas. You ready to start planning your getaway?
