Antiguo Convento de San Francisco, the Old San Francisco Convent, located in the heart of Benicarló, is an architectural site that still retains some of its history and heritage, despite the passing of time and the countless roles it has played over the centuries.
If you’re preparing a list of things to see in Benicarló, this imposing building has to be on it. Although the original convent was built in the 16th century, later modifications have given shape to the present-day building, which dates to 1791.
The Old San Francisco Convent has a small brick-built cloister topped with a double-barrel vault with three semi-circular arches on each side. The different spaces – the church, cells, kitchen, refectory and workshops – are arranged around this, divided into two buildings. The church has a Baroque façade.
The Old San Francisco Convent currently houses the Museum of the City of Benicarló (also known as MUCBE). Make sure you include it on your itinerary for Benicarló.
