Santuario de la Mare de Déu de la Balma is a beautiful shrine carved into the landscape of Zorita del Maestrazgo.

Nestled in inland province of Castellón, Zorita del Maestrazgo is home to one of the most extraordinary shrines in the Region of Valencia: Santuario de la Mare de Déu de la Balma.

Situated close to the banks of the river Bergantes, the shrine is carved out of the rockface of La Tossa hill. Extending lengthwise, the cave affords spectacular views over the surrounding landscape. The church itself is Renaissance in style with characteristic balconies, balusters and wattle and daub walls.

Legend has it that in the 14th century, the Virgin Mary appeared to a local shepherd, asking him to build a place of worship in her name.

Nowadays the shrine is place of pilgrimage and worship. Inside the beautifully rugged cave, there is a sculpture of Virgen de la Balma.
