Corcolilla Ichnological Site is home to one of the largest concentrations of dinosaur footprints in Europe.

Yacimiento Icnológico de Corcolilla, Corcolilla Ichnological Site, is located in Alpuente, in the province of Valencia. The word “ichnological” refers to the branch of geology that deals with the study of ichnites, in other words the fossil tracks left in sedimentary rock by extinct species. In the specific case of Corcolilla Ichnological Site, many important dinosaur prints have been found. The area was discovered in 1998 by a group of palaeontology enthusiasts and it has since been the subject of countless excavations.

The site comprises a series of dinosaur tracks that are in a good state of conservation. The footprints are of different shapes and sizes, indicating that they were made by different species of dinosaurs. Over time, they have been identified as the footprints of sauropods, theropods and ornithopods.

The footprints were formed some 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period. At the time, the area was covered by shallow seawater. The dinosaurs that left their footprints here walked along the seashore, leaving their footprints in the mud. Corcolilla Ichnological Site is one of the most important dinosaur fossil track site in Spain, turning it into a place of great scientific and tourist interest. The site is located about 5km from the municipality of Alpuente. It is equipped with a number of information panels that explain the history of the site and the dinosaur footprints that you can see in it. There are also footpaths that enable visitors to explore the area on foot.
