Explore El Real Castle in Olocau, a legendary 11th century fortress immortalised in The Poem of the Cid. Sitting 574m above sea level, it affords spectacular panoramic views.

Immerse yourself in the history of Castillo Real, El Real Castle in Olocau, a legendary fortress referenced in The Poem of the Cid as Hisn al Uqab. Perching 574m above sea level, this 11th century Islamic treasure overlooks the Turia plain from its strategic position that enabled visual communication with Olla Tower in Marines.

Also known as Castell del Real de Vilaragut, the fortification was one of the last to succumb to Jaime I’s conquest. Alongside Chelva and Morvedre Castles, it protected the northern part of València from Aragon attacks. After the Christian conquest, it passed through different hands, ending up as the barony of the Vilaragut in the 14th century, which was when it adopted the name it is currently known by.

The irregular plan adapts to the terrain and houses two different areas. The outer area has a cistern and the foundations of a quadrangular compartment, while the inner area – which is dominated by the presence of rocks – is where the main rooms are located. The imposing tower, in the inner area, affords spectacular views. Constructed out of rocks and limestone, the structure is both solid and elegant.

Discover this historic treasure on El Real Castle Walk, a circular trail that starts at Casa de la Senyoria before heading into the natural landscape of Sierra Calderona.
