Come and learn about an ancient seafaring tradition in València's Grao neighbourhood.

The Festes de la Creu, in honour of Santíssim Crist del Grau, or Festival of the Cross, in honour of the Holy Christ of Grao in València, commemorates some surprising events that took place in 1411. Tradition has it that the image of Christ of Grao appeared floating on a wooden ladder in the sea. It reached the mouth of the Turia River, where it was collected with great joy by those who witnessed this discovery.

Since then, the sailors of Grao have carried both the Crist del Grao and the ladder on which it floated in procession to ask for protection during storms. Over time, this religious act has become transformed into an event in which neighbours and marching bands participate, and where fireworks form part of the celebrations. This festival in València is celebrated at the beginning of May and truly transforms the atmosphere of the maritime district. Don't miss it!
