Semana Santa Marinera celebrates Holy Week just a stone’s throw from the sea. An event defined by religious devotion, traditions and music.

Semana Santa Marinera is an historic celebration of Holy Week that takes place in València’s Marítimo district, just steps from the sea. Come and experience festivities that locals look forward to all year.

The week of celebrations starts with the retreta, in which the Ntra. Señora del Rosario brotherhood announces the start of the processions.

On Holy Tuesday, the Encuentro procession takes place with Atarazanas, the historic shipyard, in the background. Devotion comes to the fore on Maundy Thursday in an event known as Nit de les Capelles or Noche de las Capillas when the religious visit all the icons housed in the different parish churches in the area.

On Good Friday the Cristos go to the sea to pray for all the passed fishermen, followed by the Vía Crucis (the stations of the cross) and the Santo Entierro (the entombment). Unusually there are no processions on Holy Saturday as the locals wait until midnight to celebrate the Resurrection by throwing water and dishes out of windows and off balconies in a demonstration of pure elation.

On Easter morning the celebrations involve fireworks, flower petals and music in a procession that is very different in tone to those of the previous days. So how about it? Do you fancy coming to experience the emotions and traditions of Semana Santa Marinera?
