Atarazanas del Grao in València is a wonderful example of Valencian civil Gothic architecture. The building dates back to the 14th century, a time when an increase in port activity forced the Consell de la Ciutat, the City Council, to build warehouses for the construction and repair of ships and the storage of goods and rigging.
The site comprises five warehouses, located next to each other, that are 48 m long and 10 m wide. They have characteristically Gothic pointed and diaphragm arches. Atarazanas del Grao harks back to the boom in Mediterranean trade. Over the centuries, the buildings have had different uses, until they were renovated in the 1990s by València Council, which reclaimed the original Gothic space. Nowadays, Atarazanas del Grao hosts temporary exhibitions that speak of the bustling cultural life you can enjoy in Marina de València. Don’t miss it.
