If traditions, parades and the thunder of gunpowder are your thing, Mutxamel awaits you in September with one of its most treasured cultural celebrations.

If you love history, colour and traditional music, the Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos, or the Moors and Christians Festival in Mutxamel, Alicante, promises a fascinating cultural experience. Held every September in honour of Our Lady of Loreto, these patron saint festivities are a much-loved local tradition with more than 150 years of history.

Mutxamel Moors and Christians Festival: traditions and events

During the main days of the festival, the town’s streets come alive with gunpowder, parades and spectacular pageantry staged by its ten comparsas. The programme brings together some of the celebrations’ most emblematic events, including the opening proclamation on the 7th, the floral offering and procession on the 9th, and the magnificent Grand Moors and Christians Parade on the 10th.

The festivities continue on the 11th and 12th with traditional arquebus battles, embassy reenactments beside the festival castle, the lively Retreta parade and open-air dances that carry on into the night. It’s a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in the folklore and warm hospitality of the province of Alicante.
