We live in a globalised world, a world where we are all connected through social, economic, cultural, political, environmental and humanitarian relationships. Tourism can act as one such nexus of connection between societies and cultures, creating synergies and favouring solidarity between countries and people.
Responsibility is a key concept of volunteer tourism, defined as “when the visitor not only considers themselves, but also the economic, social, environmental and cultural impact of their visit in the community”.
That is to say, tourism with a humanitarian heart. Tourism that not only favours the economy of the host country, but that also has a great social, educational and cultural impact. There are many different examples of voluntourism, particularly in developing countries in Latin America and Africa. Various NGOs provide information for people who want to travel while at the same time help develop the country they are visiting.
Looking beyond the economic advantages, conscious tourism underpins travel based on collaboration and social responsibility. It focuses on three main pillars, namely favouring a personal and welcoming relationship with tourists, respecting the place tourists are visiting and, finally, supporting the development of the country through specific actions.
Conscious tourism in the Region of Valencia
Conscious travel is a wonderful new way to live and experience a country or destination. The Region of Valencia is therefore working to favour and promote conscious and volunteer tourism.
Seeking to make a more prosperous, egalitarian and inclusive society, tourism is a key and strategic sector for the Region of Valencia. Each of the provinces in the Region has its own traditions, customs and ways of life; these must be maintained and valued through interesting tourist initiatives that are based on respect.
All of our provinces are also working to fight social inequalities, promote dignified work in the sector and implement a social and cultural model that is based on preserving our natural environment and our customs and traditions.
At the same time, the Region of Valencia is seeking to promote volunteer tourism for the people who need it most. Through these actions, we want to help create a better world and guarantee a sustainable future that works for everyone. Join the movement, keep travelling and discover what you can give back to each community. We’re counting on you.
