Discover a pretty part of the province of Castellón where you can soak up the rural charm and see some historic sites. Start planning your trip to Argelita.

Located in Alto Mijares in the province of Castellón, Argelita is an inland destination that we’d recommend if you love rural and nature tourism, as well as trails and walks. Keep reading to discover everything you need to know about the village ahead of your getaway.

What to see in Argelita

Argelita is home to the old Palace of the Muslim King Zeyt Abu Zeit, next to which the parish church has been built. Only two towers – one square and one round – are still standing today. The round tower has an inscription dated from the year 1252. And both towers house a museum collection.

The adjacent parish church, which is dedicated to Santa Ana, dates from the 17th century. It has a Baroque Churrigueresque style and is well worth a visit. There are also plenty of fountains where you can see the water flow.

On the outskirts of Argelita sit the ruins of Buey Negro Castle, also known as La Mola del Bou Negre, which dates back to the Arab period and has been known about since the 12th century. It would make a great destination for a hike. The river Villahermosa and the beautiful scenery around it are another of Argelita’s draws, and there are a number of natural pools and swimming areas that are a joy in the summer.

Another lovely walk is the Canaleta Trail, which is a circular route that will immerse you in spectacular landscapes. During your time in Argelita, make sure you sit down to try some of the village’s traditional dishes like olla de col con alubias y patatas (cabbage, bean and potato stew) and sopa de caldo (stock soup). They will bring your energy levels right back up again.

And last but by no means least, Argelita has a number of festivities that are a great time to visit: San Antonio Abad in January, Santa Cruz in May, La Virgen in August and La Virgen del Rosario in October. So what are you waiting for? Come and explore this fascinating municipality some time soon.
