Alicante emanates artistry from every street, every building and every corner. Art is part of the fabric of the city and there’s nowhere better to throw yourself into its most modern creations than at the city’s Contemporary Art Gallery.
Originally intended to be a grain store, the building housing the gallery is one of the most historic in the city. Nestled in the streets of the centre, the building was renovated by local artist Eusebio Sempere, who was careful to preserve the original architectural features, particularly the light-filled spaces.
Also known as MACA (the acronym of its Spanish name, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante), the gallery is one of the city’s most important culture centres. There are currently three permanent collections on display - the 20th century collection, Con el tiempo; the Caja Mediterráneo collection; and the Eusebio Sempere collection - comprising a total of 177 works of art such as paintings, sculptures, drawings, designs, screen prints and much more. These collections provide an excellent overview of the artists of the 20th century.
MACA also runs an ambitious programme of cultural events designed to spread knowledge about the art and culture of the 20th century among the general public. The museum hosts everything from talks to concerts, promoting culture in all its forms.
Alicante’s Contemporary Art Gallery will immerse you in the artistic production of the 20th century. Make sure you take a visit during your time in the city.
