What to do in Marines

Marines is a town with a fascinating history. In 1957 it was destroyed in a landslide and locals were sadly displaced. Now the town has two centres 10 kilometres apart, both equally as charming. You won’t be short of things to do here if you visit.

Surrounded by mountainous landscapes, the cobbled streets of Marines Viejo possess a unique atmosphere. Take some snaps of the old mill, trough and wash house. And don’t leave Marines Viejo without visiting Santísimo Cristo del Perdón church.

Between Marines and Marines Viejo you'll find El Real Castle, an 11th century fortress that still boasts an impressive tower, ancient walls and Arab wells.

Another historic monument that you can see in the distance from Marines Viejo is Olla Tower, located in an old Arab settlement. This square tower served as a watchtower and later stables were built for cattle, then farmhouses, shaping the area into its very own hamlet which was in use until the 19th century.

In Marines you can also visit Santísimo Cristo de las Mercedes Parish Church, and of course you must leave time for a hike along one of the picturesque trails. Cork tree forests, ravines and fountains all await. We recommend taking the PRV-8 route which crosses gorgeous landscapes, or the Agua Route where you can explore the many old fountains found in Sierra Calderona. You’ll fall in love with Marines over and over again
