Fallas in València is getting ready to fill the city with an atmosphere unlike any other. Recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, this celebration brings together a packed programme of events you will not want to miss, and visiting at this time of year means stepping straight into one of the Mediterranean’s most spellbinding experiences.

Everything begins with one of the most eagerly awaited moments. During la Crida, the fallero community gathers beside the Serranos Towers to hear the falleras mayores officially invite everyone to join the festivities, accompanied by an impressive display of light and sound that sets the tone for the weeks ahead.

From 1 to 19 March, Plaza del Ayuntamiento becomes the stage each afternoon for the unmistakable mascletá, a powerful pyrotechnic display that turns fire and gunpowder into rhythm and vibration you feel through your whole body. On 1 March, the Cabalgata del Ninot takes to the streets, followed on 2 March by the traditional Cant de l’Estoreta competition. Throughout the festival, the nights are also lit up with firework displays across the city.

On 14 March, the children’s ninots are collected from the exhibition and the ninot indultado infantil, the one spared from the flames, is announced. The following day sees la plantá of the children’s fallas, when the fallas are fully assembled in the streets, while the figures from the main monuments are retrieved and the adult ninot indultado is revealed.

By 16 March, all the fallas are in place throughout the city, and that evening the first major firework display lights up the sky in the Túria Garden, beside the striking building of Les Arts. Another display follows on 17 March, when prizes are awarded to the fallas and la Ofrenda de Flores to the Mare de Déu begins, one of the most cherished traditions for the people of València. The offering continues on 18 March, the night of the spectacular Nit del Foc. Finally, on 19 March, comes the most emotional moment of all: la Cremà, when hundreds of fallas are set alight across the city, bringing the celebration to a close.
