The Fallas de València festival will once again ignite the city with its trademark electric atmosphere. This celebration, which has been listed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, comes with a full programme of things to do and see. Visit the city during the festival and see it come alive with lights, explosions and fiesta.
The festivities begin with one of the most exciting moments, the Crida. The Fallero community comes together at Serranos Tower to witness the Falleras Mayores officially announce the start of the festival. The event includes an incredible light and sound show to kicks things off.
From 1 March until the 19 March, a loud and boisterous pyrotechnic display called a mascletà takes place everyday at 2pm in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. They use heaps of fire and gunpowder to create contagious rhythms that shake the earth and delight crowds. On the 1 March, it’s time for the Cabalgata del Ninot, and the day after, the Cant de l'Estoreta competition takes place. There are fireworks displays at night too, so you won't be short of jawdropping spectacles to enjoy.
On 14 March, the children’s small sculptures, called ninots, are collected, with the lucky chosen one put aside and therefore saved from a fiery end. The day after, the children’s fallas are set up on the streets and the ninots from the big fallas are collected. Everyone lets out a short sigh of relief for the chosen sculpture that's saved.
All the fallas are set up on the 16, and the first fireworks display - or castillo - of the festival takes place at midnight in the Turia Gardens, in front of Les Arts.
On the 17, there’s another midnight fireworks display and prizes are given out. This gives way to one of the most beautiful moments of the festival, the flower offering to Mare de Déu, which continues into the next day. Yet another nightime castillo, this time named Nit del Foc, lights up the skies. Everything builds up to the 19, with the most exciting event of them all - the cremà. This is a mass burning ritual, where hundreds of fallas are set alight all around the city. Put on your comfy shoes and prepare yourself for the madness!
