The Santuario de la Mare de Déu d'Agres, or the Mare de Déu d'Agres Sanctuary, stands just south of Agres on a rise above the remains of an old castle. It is well worth the visit!

Things to see at Mare de Déu d'Agres Sanctuary

Built from stone and facing out across the valley, the sanctuary contains a two-aisled church with a tall bell tower and a chamber dedicated to the Virgin, crowned by a dome resting on pendentives. Its origins lie in a local tradition dating back to 1 September 1484, when an image of the Virgin, believed to have disappeared in a fire in Alicante, is said to have appeared in a hackberry tree before a local shepherd. A small chapel was later built on the site and began to take on its present form from 1578 onwards.
