Perched at the very top of Altea, in its oldest quarter, the Torre de Bellaguarda (Bellaguarda Tower) served as a crucial coastal watchpoint in the 16th century.
Local history says the spot took its name from the bella guarda—the “beautiful guard” that kept the surrounding homes safe. Rectangular in shape and built from rough stone masonry, the Torre de Bellaguarda in Altea formed part of a wider defensive network, raising the alarm when pirates approached.
You'll find it located on Calle Cantería, and even today it rewards you with a privileged view across the bay and towards the Sierra de Bernia.
There's so much to see in Altea… how about planning a trip where you mooch from monument to monument?
