The Museo Etnológico Municipal del Cáñamo y Huerta, the Municipal Ethnological Museum of Hemp and Market Gardening, in Callosa de Segura is open throughout the year, offering visitors an insight into a craft that is unique in the Region of Valencia.

Hemp Museum in Callosa de Segura

The Municipal Ethnological Museum of Hemp and Market Gardening is very much a living museum, where former workers give live demonstrations of rope-making and traditional plaiting techniques. The exhibition follows the entire process, from sowing, retting and breaking the hemp in the fields to scutching and spinning the fibres, which were then used to make nets and footwear. It also explores the move towards synthetic fibres and the working conditions inside the workshops, including the effects of “cannabosis”, the respiratory disease that affected many of the craftspeople.
