More than a mere profession, artisanship is a way of life that harks back to yesteryear. Agost, in the province of Alicante, is a place where you can delve into the world of ceramics and soak up culture that dates back centuries.

Agost is famed for its artisanship. At Museo de Alfarería, you can marvel at large collections of traditional ceramics made with white clay. Artistry that has been handed down from generation to generation and that has become a firm part of the town’s identity.

This artisanship dates from many centuries ago. Indeed, there is evidence documenting ceramics from as early as the 13th century and many present-day ceramists - who have been keeping the profession alive since the 18th century - have stories to tell about their ancestors.

Agost is famed specifically for its white clay and its production of botijos, round containers used to store water. The combination of clay’s porosity and the shape of the vessel help keep the water cool. Agost, nevertheless, makes all sorts of other products coming in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. All of which showcase the skill and techniques of the artisans that make them.

Ceramic boutiques and ceramic workshops are a part of the landscape in Agost. Some of the workshops are open to visitors so you can see the masters at work and get closer to an artform that speaks of the history of the town while offering practical everyday uses. There are also ceramic-making activities available in which you can get your hands dirty and create your very own work of art.

If you are interested in seeing exhibits of ceramic pieces, make your way to Museo de Alfarería. The museum is housed in a ceramic factory dating to the early 20th century and is a part of the collection itself. Here you can see a wide range of items, shining the spotlight on the variety of the pieces the artisans make, and learn about the different stages in the creative process.

The museum runs different activities, particularly aimed at school groups. The facilities are superb and comprise conference rooms, exhibition spaces and even a library. Each year, “the piece of the year” is exhibited.

And if all that weren’t enough, Agost hosts Feria de la Artesanía de Agost, also known as Feria Artesanal y Gastronómica, a fair that celebrates the town’s ceramic tradition, as well as offering geological tours, tapas experiences and grape tasting. All against the backdrop of a bustling and festive atmosphere.

As you can see, artisanship in Agost extends far beyond a profession; it is a way of life and the focus of the town’s culture and traditions. And the town is just half an hour from Alicante, nestled in the most beautiful landscapes. Come and soak up all the artistry.
