Millenary Olive trees: La Taula del Sénia
La Taula del Sénia is a Commonwealth consisting of municipalities of three neighbouring communities, Aragón, Cataluña, and the Region of Valencia, related for various reasons: geographic, historical, cultural, and linguistic. United to promote shared objectives, such as putting value on an essential arboreal heritage unique in the world; the millenary olive trees.
The Commonwealth of La Taula del Sénia is made up of 27 municipalities: 3 Aragonese, 9 Catalan and 15 Valencian. Its name, Taula, a meeting and dialogue point, and Sénia, a natural boundary river between the provinces of Teruel, Tarragona, and Castellón, describes its primary objective. The territory that includes La Taula del Sénia is the area with the highest concentration of thousand-year-old olive trees in the world. At the moment the census of millenarian or monumental olive trees in the Sénia Territory is of 4,580 specimens. Its presence configures a mosaic of trees and dry stone in the landscape, known as "the sea of olive trees."
The highest concentration of millenary olive trees in the world
Within the Valencian territory, in the Castellón regions of Els Ports and Baix Maestrat, to the north of the Region of Valencia, is where there is the highest concentration of thousand-year-old olive trees. In the Baix Maestrat, the number of olive trees over a thousand years is higher; some reach even two thousand, authentic living monuments, witnesses of the passage of Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, and Muslims in these lands. Olive trees are considered monumental when they surpass the 3.5 meters of trunk perimeter; some even exceed ten.
In the Region of Valencia, they are protected by the Arboreal Heritage Law of May 2006, which prohibits the transplantation and trade of this type of trees and prevents the cutting of specimens of any species older than 350 years or exceeding six meters in trunk perimeter, 25 meters of diameter of tree top or the 30 metres tall.
