Did you know the Region of Valencia now has another reason to raise a glass? The European Union has officially recognised Pago de Tharsys with its own Protected Designation of Origin, Tharsys.
It’s a title reserved for Europe’s most exceptional winemaking enclaves—a true milestone for this area, and for the whole Region of Valencia. And of course, it’s yet another reason to head over to Requena for a little getaway and enjoy the wine right where it’s made.
Pago de Tharsys: Winery and Vineyards
The Pago de Tharsys vineyard is a little gem: fourteen hectares of limestone soil formed some 30 million years ago. This extraordinary setting produces wines with real personality, think: floral aromas, mineral notes and plenty of elegance.
They owe their character not only to the land, but also to a mild microclimate, fully organic cultivation, and the thoughtful choice of grape varieties such as Albariño, Xarel·lo and Bobal, which round off a sublime formula.
But Pago de Tharsys is more than its wines—it’s a piece of living history. Its roots reach back to the 16th century, when the quality of its land was already well known. And its underground cellar, carved out of rock in the early 19th century, offers a true step back in time—one you can experience first-hand on an enotourism visit.
With the new PDO Tharsys, the Region of Valencia now stands shoulder to shoulder with some of Europe’s most celebrated wine regions. So if you love good wine and seek out authentic experiences, this is a destination you’ll want to note down.
Come and toast this achievement, and you’ll soon see why Pago de Tharsys—and its Protected Designation of Origin—is just the excuse you need for a trip to remember.
And if you fancy making a real outing of it, stay in their charming country house right in the heart of the vineyard. Wake up to rows of vines outside your window, tuck into a breakfast made with local produce, and enjoy the quiet of the countryside between tastings, gentle strolls and those magical sunsets. It’s the perfect retreat where you can switch off, savour wine right where it’s made and let the slower pace of rural life do you the world of good.
