Discover a time-honoured local celebration that brings Albocàsser’s streets alive with music.

Every year, Albocàsser, in Castellón, comes alive with a tradition you won’t find just anywhere: La Festa de les Cartes i de la Rondalla de la Puríssima, the Festival of the Cards and the Rondalla of La Puríssima. It commemorates events that happened in the 19th century, involving a young lad from the village who was away doing military service.

On 7 December, four quintos, local youngsters turning 18, gather at the church doors to sing to the Virgin, before heading off through the streets with their instruments. Along the way, they play albadas—traditional folk serenades—especially for the village’s unmarried women, turning the evening into a proper, wander-through-the-lanes sort of affair.

The following day, after Mass, the festivities carry on as the lads make the rounds again, this time taking collections to help fund the celebration. With the band in tow—and anyone who fancies joining in—it becomes a joyful village procession where everyone’s invited. If you’re in the area, it’s well worth a look.
