The history of Altura will always be linked to one of the most important kings in our history, Martin the Humane, and his desire to build one of the oldest Carthusian monasteries in the Valencian region following King James I’s conquest and his efforts to Christianize the Muslim Kingdom of Valencia.

The narrow, winding streets of the village of Altura reflect the character of its people, which has been shaped over the centuries. Here, colorful local and historical figures will serve as your guides on a tour where you’ll discover much more than meets the eye, as we visit important buildings such as the Cartuja de Valldecrist or the Sanctuary of the Cueva Santa and its famous Virgin of the Cave, the subject of one of the most popular children’s songs.

Our journey through time will also take us to the Altura Oil Museum, a former oil mill dating back to 1927, where we’ll learn about and taste the wonderful olive oil from the millennia-old and century-old olive trees that have produced this precious liquid gold for centuries.
