Discover an old church in Altura which is now a cultural centre.

The municipality of Altura, in the province of Castellón, is home to a number of examples of historic heritage. Churches, plazas and unique spots beckon you to come and explore as you stroll around the historic centre. One such site is Antigua Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel, San Miguel Arcángel Old Church.

The building is popularly known as Iglesia Primitiva de Altura, or Primitiva Church. It is located in the medieval heart of the village and is an early symbol of Christian worship. It was built on an old mosque and the first references to it date back to the mid-13th century.

Built in the Valencian Gothic style, the church is defined by its masonry, cornerstone and lime white-wash, as well as its exterior buttresses and gable roof. The plan is rectangular and has four sections: the latter was added once construction on the original building was finalised, complete with diaphragm arches from the late 14th century. Inside there is a door that gave access to the old sacristy and another, which has now been closed off, which used to lead to the cemetery.

Since the 16th century, this church has had a number of public uses as a new, bigger place of worship was built to serve the growing population of Altura. Nowadays, it has become a cultural centre hosting exhibitions, concerts and theatre pieces. If you are wondering what to see in Altura, make sure you put Iglesia Primitiva on your to-visit list.
