Come and explore a lovely municipality in the province of Castellón where water has shaped great landscapes. Grab your walking shoes and get ready to have an amazing time.

Located in L’Alcalatén in the province of Castellón, Figueroles is a great destination for a getaway spent roaming trails in the great outdoors and delving into local history. Come and walk along the banks of the River Lucena and discover this small municipality’s ceramic tradition. Here are the things to see and do during your time in Figueroles.

What to do in Figueroles

A good place to start is in Figueroles Traditional Historic Centre, the layout of which hasn’t changed since medieval times. Have a wander around and before you know it you’ll find yourself in the highest part of the village. The narrow streets are peppered with a number of 19th-century ceramic altars depicting religious scenes that are in good condition.

We’d also recommend visiting San Mateo Parish Church, a Baroque place of worship, where you can admire the collection of altarpieces and wooden altars dating to between the 17th and 18th centuries as well as a number of gravestones. Next up is El Calvario Chapel in Figueroles, a small Baroque temple that you will reach along the Stations of the Cross.

Outside the centre of Figueroles, make sure you visit the El Castellar area, an archaeological site where you can explore the remains of a building formerly used for defence purposes. The views from here are spectacular. A lovely hiking trail which snakes its way through a number of different ravines leads to the area.

Penya-Roja and Roca Naram are other watchtowers you can reach on foot from Figueroles. This is a great destination if you enjoy walking in the midst of juniper trees. You’ll also find an abundance of rock shelters and the remains of Iberian settlements as well as old farmhouses and mills. All of these make great places to stop off and take some excellent photos.

Alternatively, you can set off in search of the gypsum mines, which are located in Agua Salada, a place which has a large number of saltwater springs. Running alongside the River Lucena is the Water Walk where you can take a stroll and soak up the scenery. We’d also suggest finding out about L’Alcalatén Ethnographical Route whose trails will lead you to many points of interest. So what are you waiting for? Come and fall in love with all the landscapes and culture in Figueroles
