Beniatjar is home to a surprise that is well worth exploring. Come and let the art transport you back in time.

The rock shelters in Beniatjar are part of the Rock art of the Iberian Mediterranean Basin, which is listed World Heritage by UNESCO. This ancient and historic treasure can be visited (without guided tour) as part of an incredible hiking trail. A must-visit in Beniatjar, the rock art can be reached on a circular route that will lead you to Carbonera Gorge and the castle of the same name. The trail will lead you to the rock shelters, which were discovered in the gorge in 1933.

Nowadays, the rock shelters in Carbonera Gorge in Beniatjar are protected by railings, through which you can see the art. The site has over 100 paintings or examples of schematic art, which date back to the Neolithic period, which was over 7,000 years ago, namely the 5th and 6th centuries BC.

We’d highly recommend visiting Beniatjar to explore the traditional streets and characteristic houses and enjoy soaking up the natural scenery, particularly Benicadell mountain. Start planning a getaway and come and see the rock shelters in Beniatjar as well as everything else this pretty part of the province of Valencia has to offer.
