Here’s a short guide to rural tourism in Valencia, designed to introduce you to a small village full of character. Come and explore Riola.
Riola lies in the province of Valencia, in the Ribera Baixa region, right by the River Xúquer. This small farming village, with its bright, peaceful streets, is a real pleasure to explore. As you wander around, you’ll also spot contemporary art murals on some of the building façades, adding an unexpected creative touch. It’s well worth a visit.
What to do in Riola
A day out in Riola could start at the Parish Church of Santa María la Mayor, dating back to the 18th century. From there, take a relaxed saunter towards the riverside to see the Hierro Bridge, opened in 1900, and continue on through a landscape of orange groves and rice fields.
The riverside walk offers lovely views and plenty of space to run, walk, cycle or simply unwind. It’s a great option if you enjoy the outdoors or are travelling with children. You can also head towards places that have played an important role in local farming life, such as the Riola weir, built in the 16th century. Here, culture and nature come together in a particularly attractive setting.
Other sights worth seeing in Riola include the Acequia Mayor, also known as the Canal of the Four Villages, and the Molino de Fuera. The latter is a former flour and rice mill from the 16th century, powered by water from the main canal and closely linked to the area’s agricultural past.
Visiting Riola means discovering a water-shaped landscape where nature and human ingenuity have created truly memorable places. Fancy exploring Riola and other charming villages in Valencia?
