Tavernes de la Valldigna is home to the ruins of what was once a great Muslim castle that affords spectacular views over the surrounding scenery.

Also known as Castillo de Alcalà de Alfandec and Els Castellets, Castillo de Tavernes is a fortified structure dating back to the Muslim period. Though largely in ruins, the castle is well worth a visit during your time in Tavernes de la Valldigna.

Perched on an elevated spot in the Tres Cruces mountains, as was common for these sorts of fortifications, the castle affords spectacular views over the surrounding scenery and the town. It isn't hard to imagine what the fortress looked like in its heyday.

Extending across the mountaintop, the castle was once encircled with a curtain wall with additional defensive elements. You can still see the stones used for this purpose today.

There are also two towers and a cistern, both of which were necessary if the fortress was to protect the local population from attacks. You can also see some engravings that date all the way back to when it was built, comprising an important piece of heritage.

Castillo de Tavernes is open to visitors. Please be aware, however, that given its location it is not very easy to access. Make sure you wear the right footwear and are used to mountain walking.

Tavernes de la Valldigna is a destination where the inland meets the coast, offering great beaches and sights such as Cueva del Bolomor, a cave that was inhabited by our ancient ancestors who left behind traces of their lives for posterity. The cuisine in the area is also delicious. So what are you waiting for? Start planning your getaway today.
