Sitting on what used to be the banks of the river Turia is València’s Fine Arts Museum, a centenary institution that will immerse you in the artwork created by some of the greatest artists from the previous centuries.

First opening its doors in 1837, the Fine Arts Museum is the second biggest art gallery in Spain. It houses paintings, drawings, prints, archaeological finds, architectural elements, photographs and decorative art.

The building housing the collections is a work of art in and of itself. Colegio Seminario de San Pío V was founded in the 17th century and is a splendid Baroque piece with beautiful spaces like the Palacio del Embajador Vich patio.

València’s Fine Arts Museum boasts world-class collections. You can see many works by local artists, known as the Primitivos Valencianos, who were creating from the late 14th to the early 15th centuries. Specifically from this period, there is work by Alcanyís, Nicolau, Jacomart and Reixach. You will also have the opportunity to marvel at the work of other illustrious Valencian artists, namely Joanes, Espinosa, Vicente López, Pinazo and Sorolla.

The gallery also displays pieces by artists who are not from the Region of Valencia: Van Dyck, for instance, as well as Murillo, Velázquez, El Greco and Goya. The quality and historic importance of the collections makes the Fine Arts Gallery well worth a visit during your time in València. And if you’re left craving more culture, look no further than IVAM and Museo de Historia de la Ciudad de València.
