Sadly every carnival has an end, and in Pego, like in many parts of the Region of Valencia, this culminates in the Entierro de la Sardina. This is a satirical ceremonial event that precedes la Cuaresma - Lent, and consists of a giant sardine at its centre.

In Pego, the Entierro de la Sardina is a big deal. There is a witty parade where a large sardine is carried along, followed by a pretend funeral procession. After, the sardine is cremated and there is a spectacular display of fireworks. And that is how Carnival ends, giving way to Lent in a truly unique fashion. This event is the perfect excuse to visit Pego in winter. Come and join the party, experience something different.
