La Mata beach in Torrevieja takes its name from an old watchtower that’s well worth discovering.

Torre La Mata, La Mata Tower, in Torrevieja, Alicante, stands right by the sea on the beach that bears its name. This defensive tower once formed part of the coastal surveillance system and was built to protect the old Era de la Sal of La Mata, as well as the loading pier that once stood opposite it, of which a few remains can still be seen.

Where is La Mata Tower in Torrevieja and what is it like?

La Mata Tower has a circular layout, measuring around five to six metres in diameter and rising to a modest height. It is topped with a projecting moulding that marks the end of its cylindrical structure.

The small entrance opens on the side furthest from the sea, while several narrow, elongated openings were used to keep watch over the coastline.

Inside, the tower consists of a single space covered by a stone vault, with walls built from irregular masonry. Today, surrounded by the urban landscape, it is an ideal spot to combine local heritage with a seaside walk and open views of the Mediterranean. It's a place rich in history right on the coast.
