Located at the highest point of the historic centre, Iglesia Parroquial de San Bartolomé Apóstol, San Bartolomé Apóstol Parish Church in Jávea, is a fortified church whose construction began in the early 16th century on the remains of earlier medieval structures.
Things to see at San Bartolomé Apóstol Parish Church in Jávea
Built with solid ashlar walls, San Bartolomé Apóstol Parish Church has a single nave, chapels set between buttresses and a star-shaped ribbed vault.
Its exterior still reflects the defensive role it once played, with machicolations above the entrances, a flat roof terrace and a tower forming part of the apse. The building also has two notable Gothic doorways: the main entrance, dedicated to San Bartolomé, with a pointed arch and pinnacles, and the side entrance of San Gil, reached by its characteristic double staircase. A visit to San Bartolomé Apóstol Parish Church reveals how religious and military architecture were combined within the fabric of Jávea’s historic centre.
