Grab your camera and join us on a journey to abandoned places frozen and reclaimed by mother nature. What’s more of an adventure than this?

The Region of Valencia’s abandoned villages are doorways into a forgotten Spanish past, where the only sounds are those of mother nature, gradually reclaiming her space among the remnants of old buildings. If you enjoy hiking, photography or exploring local culture and history, then you’ll love exploring the mysterious Valencian ghost villages. Ready for an adventure into the rural unknown?

Abandoned villages in Castellón

Les Alberedes, Portell de Morella

This tiny village still retains a Gothic chapel dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries and rustic stone farmhouses. It sits on the edge of the region and can be easily reached on a leisurely hike from the village of Portell Morella.

El Jinquer, Alcudia de Veo

Nestled in a small valley with a stream running through it, El Jinquer is a hamlet in Alcudia de Veo which dates back to the Islamic era. More experienced hikers can reach this fairytale spot on a 5km walk to admire the castle ruins and views of valley.

Abandoned villages in Valencia

Underwater villages

Scattered across the province of Valencia are villages lost beneath the waters, relocated to make way for reservoirs. When water levels drop, rooftops and bell towers emerge from the depths, revealing traces of the past. Visit places like Loriguilla, Tous and Domeño Viejo and see if you can snap some dramatic photos.

La Cornudilla, Requena

Our tour of the ghost villages in the Region of Valenicia now takes us to the ramshackle hamlet of La Cornudilla in Requena which is stepped in spooky legends. Located 18 kilometres from the town, it’s best to drive to this fascinating location.

Abandoned villages in Alicante

Preventorio de Aigües, Aigües

This grand 19th-century luxury hotel, now left to the elements, sits just a kilometre from Aigües. Go for a stroll to this hauntingly beautiful site and capture its undeniable air of mystery on camera.

Colonia de Santa Eulalia, entre Sax y Villena

This former industrial and residential settlement is a remarkable example of late 19th-century architecture inspired by the utopian socialist movement. The idea was to build homes and essential services around industries, creating self-sufficient communities. Today, this unique site, located about 4.5 km from Sax and 8 km from Villena, offers a fascinating glimpse into this vision of urban living.

The list of abandoned villages in the Comunitat Valenciana goes on and on, each site shrouded in mystery and a distinct sense of nostalgia. As you explore these forgotten places on hikes through the scenic surroundings, remember that entering derelict buildings is not recommended, as they can pose structural risks. To preserve these villages, it’s best to admire them from a safe distance, respecting the local history and scenery.
