La Cueva Santa Shrine Pilgrimage in Altura sees large numbers of people come together every year on the last Sunday in April. The pilgrimage ends at a karst cave, some 20m deep, that has been converted into a place of worship. As you descend some steps, you will discover an image of the Virgin Mary, which has been connected to a number of different miracles and healings. These events inspired the pilgrimage.
The waters that used to flow in the cave are said to have healing properties. Legend has it that a man from Jérica was cured of leprosy after using the water, and the rest is history.
Thousands of people take part in La Cueva Santa Shrine Pilgrimage in Altura. People travel from nearby towns and villages on foot, on horseback and even by car in a pilgrimage that dates back to the 16th century. Beyond the religious element, this is a day of festivities in which traditions and gastronomy accompany the pilgrims that are always immersed in incredible surroundings.
If you would like to come and see this very special event, we also recommend visiting Altura’s other sites, such as Cartuja de la Vall de Crist, Primitiva church and El Batán. Come and enjoy our traditions.
