Discover El Batán, an historic fulling mill that tells the story of Altura’s industrial past.

The sights and monuments in Altura tell the story of this pretty village’s past. El Batán de Valldecrist is a case in point: a fulling mill that shines a light on the evolution of production over the centuries.

El Batán was built by Carthusian monks in the late 15th century to commercialise the wool obtained from their flocks of sheep. In the mill, the wool was transformed into material and then clothing.

Wool production continued in this way until the late 17th century. Due to the farming crisis, the production process then shifted to paper, which the mill continued to produce until the mid-19th century.

Over the years, the mill has fallen into ruin; nevertheless, efforts are being made to restore it. Cultural association El Cantal, with the collaboration of Ayuntamiento de Altura, is currently renovating the gardens, transforming them into an ethnobotanical exhibition that showcases the plants of Alto Palancia.

So what are you waiting for? Come and visit the ruins of the mill and discover a slice of Altura’s fascinating past.
