Visit Benafigos, a small mountain village set high above the surrounding landscape.
Benafigos, in Castellón, is a small village in the L’Alt Maestrat region, with a clear medieval air and perched high on a hilltop. From its old quarter, the views are sweeping and far-reaching. Fancy uncovering its lesser-known corners and heading out on foot through the surrounding countryside following routes that reveal a different side to these hills?
What to see in Benafigos
Old town walls
As you wander through the oldest streets, you will come across remains of the old town walls of Benafigos. Former gateways and stretches of the defensive wall have been absorbed into the façades of several houses, forming part of everyday village life. A walk along Calle Cavallers is essential if you want to spot these remains up close.
Parish Church of San Juan Bautista
This Gothic church, which dates back to the 13th century, has the solid appearance of a fortress. It is thought that it may have been built using the walls of the former castle of Benafigos, which would explain its sturdy, defensive character.
Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Virgen de la Ortisella
Around 3 km from the village centre stands this 16th-century hermitage, sheltered by a very old elm tree and surrounded by a number of natural springs.
Hermitage of El Calvario
Built in the 18th century, this small hermitage has a simple presence that leaves a lasting impression, despite its modest size.
Walking routes in Benafigos
Exploring the natural surroundings of Benafigos means coming across old structures once linked to the use of water. Washhouses, fountains and wells appear along several of the signposted municipal trails:
- The Les Fonts route: this trail in Benafigos begins at a scenic viewpoint and leads you from spring to spring through pretty countryside.
- The Font de la Figuera route: this trail takes you through striking ravines along a clearly marked path.
We invite you to fall for a landscape shaped by olive, almond and hazelnut trees, and to delve into the history of this village of Arab origin, whose lands were crossed by the Knights Templar and the Order of Montesa and which once stood witness to ancient battles.
If you are keen on photography, remember to bring your best camera, as the views are spectacular. You will also be very close to the astronomical observatory in Culla, with plenty to look forward to in Benafigos!
