One of the most important sights in Caudiel, Convento de las Carmelitas Descalzas is an austere convent inhabited by the Discalced Carmelites.

Convento de las Carmelitas Descalzas has been peacefully sitting in Caudiel from the year 1685. Though austere and unadorned, the convent has a grandeur that will capture your attention and leave you wondering what lies inside.

Surrounded by an impressive stone wall, the convent’s austerity speaks of the simple and contemplative lifestyle of the Carmelitas Descalzas, the Discalced Carmelites. The nuns rarely open the doors of their convents to visitors, but you can – and should – visit the church and the choir.

The church comprises a single nave with chapels on either side. The style of the interior is Baroque and there is an interesting sculpture of the Ecce Homo. In the choir, you will be taken aback by the rich decorations comprising Valencian ceramics made in Manises in the 17th century. There are also large kitchen gardens and cloisters, which are not open to visitors.

Convento de las Carmelitas Descalzas in Caudiel is one of many sights that are worth visiting in this part of the province of Castellón. While you’re here, we also recommend exploring the Sierra de Espadán mountainscape and Torre del Molino, a defence structure dating back to the time Aníbal conquered the town of Sagunto. Start planning your trip to this pretty village and make sure you visit its beautiful convent.
