The powerful sound of over a thousand drums in l'Alcora on Good Friday transforms the town into a striking representation of the grief surrounding the death of Jesus Christ.

At midday on Good Friday,l'Alcora comes alive with a powerful sound as over a thousand drums beat in unison, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. This collective rhythm fills the air with emotion, making the tradition a truly moving experience.

The beating of the drums, known as the rompida, expresses the pain of the death of Jesus Christ. In Plaza de España, members of the town's brotherhoods gather eagerly, awaiting the chime of the hour marked by Repés tower. A chosen individual is invited to initiate the rompida by striking their drum four times. The silence is shattered by the eruption of thousands of drums, filling the square with an overwhelming roar.

Rompida de la Hora takes place between 12pm and 1pm. The event includes a procession of drums and bass drums, which makes its way to Plaza de la Iglesia. Here, a religious ceremony takes place, culminating in another rompida, this time initiated by the parish priest.

Since its inception in 1991, the tradition of l'Alcora's drum procession has attracted visitors from all over, eager to experience the unique and powerful emotions evoked by the resounding beats. Come and experience this Good Friday custom in l'Alcora, which, alongside Alzira’s Tamboradas, was recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2018.
