The Acto del Desembarco de Santa María Magdalena, the arrival of Santa María Magdalena by sea in Moncofa, Castellón, is one of the coastal processions with the longest-standing tradition in the Region of Valencia.
When does the arrival of Santa María Magdalena by sea in Moncofa take place?
This festival is held at the end of July, with two weeks of activities. Its origins date back to 1423, when King Alfonso V of Aragon got caught in a storm and was forced to come ashore on this beach while carrying the image of the saint.
Each year, the town recreates this moment through the Acto del Desembarco de Santa María Magdalena, with a moving reenactment in which the image arrives by sea and is brought ashore. The celebrations bring together the town’s connection to the sea and its local history, creating an event like no other, and one well worth experiencing!
