El Alto Mijares: monuments, art and history

As there is so much art and history sprinkled across El Alto Mijares, it is hard to put together a list of historic and contemporary heritage. To name just a few examples, we would recommend visiting the parish church, Buey Negro Castle, and Ceyt Abu Ceyt Castle and Palace in Argelita. Cirat is a lovely municipality with a beautiful historic centre whose highlight is the Tower of Los Condes de Cirat Palace, as well as the ruins of the old castle.

And though it is not strictly a monument, you can’t leave El Alto Mijares without gazing at the hanging houses located in Maimona ravine in Fuente la Reina, which has incredible heritage sites connected to water located within the municipality borders. Los Morrones Archaeological Site in Cortes de Arenoso will give you an insight into what life was like in the Iron Age and the centre has got a number of lovely old wash houses to visit.

Next up are the beautiful chapels in Puebla de Arenoso and then there’s Fanzara where the Unfinished Street Art Museum, also known as MIAU, has filled the walls of the village with a contemporary art exhibition which you can enjoy in the fresh air. All artistic styles have their place in El Alto Mijares.

El Alto Mijares: active tourism and natural landscapes

There is an almost endless amount of hiking and cycling trails in El Alto Mijares. Each municipality has routes that will lead you up hills affording great vistas or to the ruins of old castles. You can also enjoy some natural treasures in the area, such as the most historic oak tree in Spain. The latter is located in Cortes de Arenoso and has a lovely walk to it.

Montanejos is a wonderful destination when it comes to trails - like the spectacular one that will take you to Negra Cave - as well as rafting. Last on this list, though far from the last in real-life, is Montán where you will fall in love with the woodland and springs dotting the landscape.

El Alto Mijares: natural pools

During your time in El Alto Mijares, you will soon realise the importance of water in the landscapes embracing the municipalities. There are many inland natural pools where you can take a swim in the midst of natural beauty.

Fuente de los Baños in Montanejos is a picture-perfect natural pool whose thermal waters are surrounded by tall rockfaces. When you’ve been once, you will want to come back time and time again. There are also natural pools  in Argelita, Cirat – at the Salto de la Novia waterfall – and Montán. Embark on all sorts of adventures in a charming county that has plenty of surprises up its sleeves and find yourself falling head over heels in love with El Alto Mijares.
