Benicàssim is a pretty seaside town that has a lot going for it, from music festivals to beaches and mountains where you can take the most incredible hikes. And that’s not all. The destination also offers you the opportunity to experience its past through your senses.
Museo Bodegas Carmelitano is a case in point: a distillery steeped in history and tradition that will take you back in time through a very special spirit.
Licor Carmelitano has become somewhat of a legend in the province of Castellón. The origins of the drink date back to the Discalced Carmelite Fathers, a religious order that came to Desierto de las Palmas to build a monastery. To meet the needs of the novices, the order decided to make and sell an aromatic spirit made with the native herbs found growing in this beautiful landscape.
More than a century has passed and yet these traditions are still very much alive. Innovating the original process, Bodegas Carmelitano promotes this great legacy by producing a number of different types of spirit, in addition to Licor Carmelitano. The distillery is one of the most historic in Spain, which you can now explore for yourself. Museo Bodegas el Carmelitano is opening its doors so you can discover its history and savour its spirits in tasting sessions.
