The Les Cassoletes Festival in Castelló de Rugat centres on a local tradition of sharing oven-baked rice, alongside traditional dancing and cultural gatherings at the chapel.

The Festa de les Cassoletes, Les Cassoletes Festival, takes place in Castelló de Rugat, in Valencia’s La Vall d'Albaida region, on the Sunday after 15 October. Its name refers to the small casserole dishes at the heart of the celebration.

What is the Les Cassoletes Festival in Castelló de Rugat?

The tradition began in the 1920s, when local teacher Teresa Estruch started taking her pupils up to the Chapel of San Antonio Abad and Santa Bárbara to share a casserole of arròs al forn, oven-baked rice, on the saint’s feast day.

Over time, that simple custom grew into a much-loved local occasion with strong ethnographic roots. Today, residents and visitors gather around the chapel to eat the traditional dish together, with folk dancing and activities for children adding to the day.
