What to do in Gavarda

Gavarda is divided into three urban centres: the old quarter, the new site which was settled following floods in 1982, and the barrio of Villariezo. If you take a walk through its oldest area, where a few residents still live, you’ll find some old houses dotted around the rambling streets, surrounded by fruit fields alongside the shimmering Júcar river.

If you’re drawing up an itinerary, La Purísima Parish Church should be your first stop. Then you can continue on to an old public washhouse, a place which has preserved all its ancient charm.

The Napoleonic Battery of Gavarda, in its newest quarter, is a fascinating monument to its storied past. Built in the early 19th century, this old fortification was a key defensive emplacement during the Peninsular War, fought between 1808 and 1814, built to control the River Júcar and face the advance of French troops. Its elevated position gives you a fantastic panoramic view, and a good chunk of its structure has survived to this day.

If you enjoy photography, you’ll also love the Puente del Rey (King’s Bridge) built in the 18th century, as well as the Puente de Hierro (iron bridge) which crosses the Júcar river between Gavarda and Beneixida and dates from the 20th century.

Another great option is to walk different hiking trails in Gavarda that will take you on an exploration of its pretty natural surrounds. The views over the River Júcar and the traditional agricultural land are an added bonus to your visit. You’re going to love the peace and quiet of the landscapes here and its proximity to other historical destinations in the area like Antella. Come for a visit!
