Come to Requena to explore an important part of its distant past. Discover an incredible archaeological day out.

Poblado Ibérico de la Muela de Arriba, La Muela de Arriba Iberian Settlement in Requena, is embraced by the vines of a destination renowned for its wines. But beyond this, Requena promises incredible culture. This Iberian settlement will transport you back in history. If you enjoy hiking, you’ll be pleased to hear that you can walk to the site.

La Muela de Arriba Iberian Settlement sits on a higher piece of land and affords incredible views. Once here, you will have the opportunity to take a look around this fortified settlement. In its time, the population depended on another legendary town, Kelin in Caudete de las Fuentes, and it had relationships with other settlements. As you can see, the area has been a great place to live for many centuries.

The settlement is thought to have been abandoned in the 2nd century BC with the arrival of the Romans. Despite its antiquity, you can still make out the structures of the properties as well as a defensive area. The remains of what is thought to be a tower have also been found and, importantly, a quarry.

We’d recommend planning an archaeological getaway to Requena and visiting La Muela de Arriba Iberian Settlement. Once you’ve finished your explorations, you can stop off in the municipality to enjoy some of its famous sausages and legendary wines and cavas.
