El Septenario de la Virgen de Santerón is one of the Region of Valencia’s most unusual pilgrimages, and there's a long history behind it.

El Septenario de la Virgen de Santerón, the Septenary of the Virgin of Santerón, is celebrated in Vallanca, Valencia, bringing residents and visitors together around a centuries-old tradition and offering a fascinating insight into local culture.

When is the Vallanca Septenary?

The Septenary of the Virgin of Santerón is a traditional pilgrimage held every seven years, from 16 to 26 September. Pilgrims make their way to the Santerón Hermitage, in a neighbouring village, before carrying the image of the Virgin on their shoulders back to Vallanca. She remains there for nine days, during which a programme of festivities and cultural events takes place before the return journey.

One of the most standout moments is the ritual known as “El Inventario”, or “Censo del ajuar”, when the mayors of both villages sign an official document listing the jewellery and other belongings that accompany the image. The celebrations are also a wonderful opportunity to discover the heritage and food of El Rincón de Ademuz while soaking up the buzzy atmosphere.
