Mercado de San Mateo in Alcoy has been opening its doors on a near daily basis since 1947. After decades of shoppers coming and going, in 2002 the decision was made to renovate the building which opened its doors once again to much fanfare among the local community.

The market has 37 stalls that offer a wide range of services to meet the needs of modern customers, such as delivery service, a cloakroom and free parking. But what the market really does best is purvey quality produce and provide exceptional service. The stallholders will soon turn you into a regular.

San Mateo market is the epicentre of life in Alcoy. During your time here make sure you stop by to get the ingredients to make pericana and, if you’re in town on a Saturday, enjoy tapas served between 1pm and 3pm. You’ll then be fully fuelled to explore everything else there is to see in the town, including the beautiful Modernist buildings on Santa Rita, San Mauro, San Antonio and San Blas streets.
