Elche preserves the largest historic palm grove in Europe, a unique cultural landscape inherited from the Arab agricultural system, with an irrigation system that uses water in shifts to cultivate rectangular plots. In autumn, the palm groves show their most serene side: soft light, pleasant temperatures, and a green mosaic that coexists with community gardens where neighbors and associations keep the agricultural tradition alive. These spaces combine heritage, biodiversity, and everyday life, offering an authentic view of the link between the city and its palm trees. Here, the palm tree tradition, seasonal crops, and community participation intertwine to reveal the cultural and natural essence of Elche.

Discover Elche in spring through a unique experience that combines heritage, tradition and sustainability during one of the most special times of the year: Holy Week.

The tour begins at the Palm Grove Museum, located in the historic Huerto de San Plácido. In this iconic setting, an interpretative tour is held to explore the history and unique character of the Elche Palm Grove, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The visit includes a live demonstration by a palm grover, a traditional trade that forms part of Elche’s agricultural heritage and continues to be passed down from generation to generation.

The experience continues at the Hort de Felip, a community urban garden that showcases the agricultural tradition of the Camp d’Elx and new sustainable practices. Throughout the tour, participants will discover the historical evolution of palm cultivation and Elche’s orchards, and learn about organic farming, composting, native plants and seasonal crops, all set against a backdrop of centuries-old palm trees that are at their most splendid in spring.

Taking part in this experience during Holy Week allows you to enjoy Elche at a time of particular beauty and cultural vibrancy. The mild spring temperatures, the floral scents of the Palmeral and the city’s vitality make this visit the perfect choice for those seeking cultural, experiential and sustainable tourism.

An ideal activity for travellers who wish to connect with the local identity, understand its living heritage and, for a few hours, become part of a tradition dating back thousands of years.
